On August 15th, a select team from Playbook Direct packed their bags and jetted across the Atlantic on an experience designed to reward hard work, build leaders, and expand minds. The destination? New York City. Known worldwide for its energy, ambition, and culture, NYC was the perfect setting for a week that mixed development, adventure, and connection.
This wasn’t just a company holiday. The trip was a silent competition, with criteria kept under wraps until the winners were revealed. The top performers and business owners earned their place on the jet, and the itinerary was packed with opportunities to learn, grow, and celebrate milestones together.
One of the most valuable parts of the trip was the chance to visit our partner offices across the United States. Meetings with like-minded teams gave us the opportunity to exchange strategies, compare leadership models, and explore the practical differences between markets. From morning huddles with New Jersey-based teams to roundtable sessions focused on scaling performance, our team soaked in every interaction with an open mind and a shared goal, to bring the best ideas back home.
Conversations with seasoned leaders across the pond prompted us to think more deeply about our own structure. How do we promote autonomy while staying aligned? What systems are helping us grow, and which ones are holding us back? These reflections didn’t just lead to answers; they sparked important questions. The mindset wasn’t “copy and paste”, it was “learn and adapt.”
Outside the boardrooms and offices, the city itself added another layer of perspective to the experience. The team wandered through Times Square, watched the skyline from rooftops, and navigated the train systems with varying degrees of success. Although we’re used to the buzz of Manchester, there’s a different kind of pace in New York, and our team adapted with enthusiasm.
One of the highlights was attending a New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox baseball game. This wasn’t just about sport. For our CEO, who grew up in Massachusetts, watching his hometown team play the Yankees at Yankee Stadium was a powerful full-circle moment. For the rest of us, it was a memorable way to connect outside meeting rooms and taxi queues. Side-by-side in the stands, we cheered, laughed, and argued over who had the better hot dogs, team moments that don’t show up on spreadsheets but mean everything to company culture.
Throughout the week, there was a noticeable shift. People who had earned their spots on the trip through individual performance found themselves thinking more broadly. What does it take to lead a team across borders? How can we build something that lasts beyond the next campaign or quarter? These weren’t just tourists; they were future leaders sharpening their vision.
The return to Manchester came with more than just photos and souvenirs. It came with renewed clarity and ambition. The NYC experience lit a fire within the team, not just to earn the next trip, but to level up in every area, strategy, communication, and execution. Those not on the jet this time now know what’s possible. There’s an unspoken challenge in the air: who’s going next?
At Playbook Direct, we’ve always believed in promoting based on performance, not politics. The NYC trip is one example of how we celebrate results while fuelling future growth. It stood as a living reflection of our culture, we work hard, we learn together, and when the time’s right, we reward success in bold ways.
Trips like this aren’t a given. They’re earned. And the next one is already on the horizon. To the team members hungry for more, keep pushing. Your name might be on the next boarding pass.
